Yes, you can survive without expensive sunglasses

expensive eyewear

Although the build quality and two-year warranty of brands such as Hugo Boss or Ray-Ban play in favour of the expensive eyewear ’cause’, the reality is that, these days, there isn’t a huge gap between a £200 and £20 pair of sunglasses.

Let’s be fair, comparing the big brands with budget sunglasses using a model like the Wayfarer, which is by design made of plastic, isn’t a very good idea. Making a fair comparison between ‘luxury’ and budget eyewear is not a matter of ‘my plastics are better than yours’. Nor it should be. Sunglasses are much more than just the design and material of the frames.

Sunglasses nowadays need to meet certain EU requirements for UV protection, visible light protection and even impact resistance.

However, and although the materials used by big brands are usually better, the reality is that in the age of the global economy and the relocation of production costs, smaller companies can come up with better products at a fraction of the cost.

This means, the materials used in the production of a £20 pair of sunglasses can be better today than, say, they were 10-20 years ago.

There is nothing wrong with having nice things or being a fan boy/girl. However, if there is one thing that definitely plays in favour of brands like Ray-Ban, Persol or Armani, is the brand itself.

Not that smaller companies that rely on Amazon ratings do not invest in keeping up with the trends and launching new designs every year. They do – you have to if you want to keep in the fashion business. However, the harsh reality is that in the end it is still the big boys who have the last word when it comes to what’s in and what’s out each year.

And that is the biggest and most important difference between a £200 and £20 pair of sunglasses.
