You do not have to spend a fortune to look like a fashion icon. Ray Ban sunglasses are very popular as it is a brand that everyone can afford. Recently, this sunglasses giant has even expanded their market with prescription frames that provide professional look in contrast with the relaxed look of the Wayfarer or Aviator. But why are Ray-Ban’s so popular?
Aviator sunglasses were originally developed by American suppliers of eye care Bausch & Lomb. These were the first sunglasses to use a green lens that filtered UV rays. Because they were used by US Army Air Pilots fighting World War II, they were called Aviators. In the last years of the 1930’s, Bausch & Lomb refashioned its original frame and branded the Aviators Ray-Ban, literarily meaning to ban the rays of the sun.
Bausch & Lomb also developed the popular Wayfarers. This was back in the 1950’s. In the following years, Wayfarers were sported by James Dean in the cult classic “Rebel Without a Cause” and immortalised by Audrey Hepburn in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Films and TV shows like The Blues Brothers, The Breakfast Club, Miami Vice or Risky Business helped popularise them and will always be paramount to the wayfarer fan culture.
Despite giving birth to two of the most popular sunglasses designs ever, Bausch & Lomb eventually sold Ray-Ban to the Luxottica Group. To this day Ray-Ban remains a global leader in eyewear. The popularity of the brand’s sunglasses continues to increase due to multiple marketing strategies some of which use films and Pop culture to create brand awareness. The spirit is: if the celebrities use them, they must certainly be good.
