Things to Consider in Choosing Kids Sunglasses

June 20, 2019

Kids sunglasses are labelled by the Food and Drug Administration Center (FDA) for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). The FDA believes that non-prescription sunglasses pose risk to the safety of customers, especially kids.

However, manufacturers of sunglasses are still not required to be approved by the FDA before they market and distribute their products. So, what are the things that the FDA requires to make sure that you have chosen safe sunglasses for your kids?

Things to consider in choosing kids sunglasses:

The Food and Drug Administration Center require kids sunglasses to be equipped with impact resistant lenses. It is mandatory for manufacturers of sunglasses to conduct an impact resistance test on the sample of each batch of sunglasses they produce. The impact test is conducted with the use of a ball. Striking the lens, the ball should not be able to break the lens when it hits it in order for the products to pass the test.

Manufacturers of kids sunglasses must comply with the international standards for biocompatibility and flame resistance, which are issued by the International Standards Organization or American National Standards Institute. The sunglasses must be designed with flame resistance materials and must be made of non-toxic and hypoallergenic materials as well.

According to the requirements by the Food and Drug Administration Centre, kids sunglasses must be labelled. The attached label must contain relevant information such as the name of the company, the place of business, and the instruction for proper usage. They must also be labelled to identify the product.

More importantly, the sunglasses must be able to deflect the sunlight and meet the labelled optical type information. An example of labelled optical type information is “blocks harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays”.

Parents only want the best for their children. The overall health, including the safety of the eyes, of the children is a treasure that should be protected. Sunglasses, above other accessories, are the best way to do so.

By adhering to the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration Centre, manufacturers will be able to capture the desire and attention of parents whose priority are the safety of their children.
