Cat Eye Sunglasses – Out of the Beehive

June 20, 2019

Cat Eye glasses – be it sunglasses or reading glasses – are usually associated with 1950’s and 1960’s ladies’ fashion and glamour. Also with the eccentric beehive hairstyle. But this unusual and now retro design is not exclusive of women’s eyewear.

Contrary to common perception, the upsweep at the edges that defines Cat Eye shaped glasses is not exclusively a ladies’ eyewear design. Otto Wichterle, the Czech chemist that helped men and women overcome the stigma of wearing specs – before reading glasses became fashionable again – by inventing modern soft contact lenses is pictured below sporting Cat Eye frames.

At their time considered futuristic or avant-garde, Cat Eye’s popularity slowly faded through the 1970’s and 1980’s, paving the way to an edgier form of eyewear: bug-eye glasses.

Popularized by legendary rock singer Bono Vox (circa 1991, Achtung Baby album) the bug-eye is still one of the most popular designs when it comes to sports eyewear.

Throughout their lives and careers, iconic personalities such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Tailor were often seen in public sporting Cat Eye glasses.
