Allergic reactions to sunglasses Part I – Causes

June 20, 2019

Contact dermatitis is often a problem if you wear sunglasses, reading glasses or any other eyewear. If you experience itching or sore spots on your nose or temples or on you cheeks you may be having an allergic reaction to sunglasses.

Metal frames

Some people have high sensitivity to some types of metal. If that’s the case, you may need to look for sunglasses with hypoallergenic frames. Nickel is a common allergen. Even if a frame looks silver or gold it may contain some nickel. Also, although titanium – a popular material for frames – doesn’t usually cause allergic reactions, some titanium frames contain palladium which may cause skin problems.

Plastic frames and other allergens

Plastic frames are usually a combination of materials. Optyl, nylon and propionate frames are safe choices for people who are sensitive to plastics. However, nose pads, the little plastic or silicone pads on certain frames may irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions around the nose. If that’s the case, choosing frames with hypoallergenic silicone pads is the best option.
