A bit of Aviators history – From the Monocle to CinemaScope

June 20, 2019

Aviator sunglasses are one of the most popular models of sunglasses for men. But contrary to popular belief, Aviators were not originally developed by Ray Ban – which, indeed, later popularized this ever so popular design.

Aviator sunglasses are, in fact, a style of sunglasses originally developed by American New York company Bausch + Lomb. The brand developed the aviator design in 1936 to protect pilot’s eyes when flying, hence the name ‘aviators’.

What most aviator sunglasses fans don’t know is that Bausch + Lomb started by making monocles, and ended up selling all sorts of optic related products such as periscopes, binoculars, torpedo tube sights, and… contact lenses, which were first brought to market by this NY company in 1971.

The company responsible for putting the term ‘Aviator’ in the dictionary of style, is also responsible for the invention of the CinemaScope lens which made the wide screen effect possible, enabling cinemas to double screen width.
