Throughout history and on their own merit, sunglasses became a widespread accessory in popular culture. From the first incipient versions of sunglasses used by the Inuit in the Artic regions, to Jack Nicholson, Lagerfeld, Bono Vox, Elvis or the Velvet Underground – just to name a few – a pair of dark glasses are sometimes the primary component of a look.

  1. The first versions of sunglasses can be dated back to prehistoric times. Artic peoples whore flattened walrus ivory glasses looking through narrow slits to block sun rays.
  2. Since the 1920’s, sunglasses became widespread, especially among movie stars.
  3. Indeed, sunglasses are glamorous. Ask singer songwriter Chrissie Hynde, who once wrote: ‘A kind of glamour/You can lend yourself/Like dark sunglasses/And you’ll remember/How good it tasted’.
  4. It was Jack Nicholson who once said: ‘With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60.’
  5. Sunglasses have also become associated with certain lifestyles. When you’re young and having fun is what life’s all about, sunglasses help you keep it together if you need to hide the undesirable effects of a long night.

  6. In the XX century, sunglasses hence became part of popular culture on their own merit.
  7. Legendary rock singer Patti Smith once said sunglasses were like her guitar.
  8. And The Velvet Underground (Lou Reed’s cult band from the sixties) members were seldom seen without sunglasses.
  9. Most high-end fashion brands launch designer sunglasses every year. Karl Lagerfeld, the fashion designer himself, is known to be a sunglasses aficionado.
  10. And it has been recently disclosed that the lead singer of U2 is never seen in public without sunglasses, not only as a stylish option, but also due to health reasons.
